High Windows and Bandaged Skies

Spacer

My studio is on the top of an old disused mill in East Belfast. Over the last two years I have become interested in its high windows and the vantage point they offer over the city. In many of the windows the panes of glass are broken and have been heavily taped over by the various occupants of the building in a series of make do repairs. This sequence of paintings examines the effect of the changing light conditions on the interior spaces of the mill and on the city beyond the windows. I have become conscious of the fact that the light will continue to transfigure the landscape and the decaying building when I am no longer a witness. Additionally within the paintings the taping has become a metaphor for the bandaging of wounds, a reference to events during the building's hundred-year history.
